Lead Charity Velindre Cancer Centre were at the heart of the action at the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run on Sunday 26 September.
With a team of nearly 200 fundraisers in the unmissable lime green of Velindre, a hugely impressive £44,666.96 was raised for the Hospital of Hope. Those runners included Derek’s Dazzlers, lead by BBC weatherman Derek Brockway, who prepared, trained, battled lockdown and went through every minute of the race experience with each other. Some of the Dazzlers had received cancer treatment at Velindre, who were a great support when they needed it most.
The funds raised will now go towards the cancer centre, helping to ensure that cancer patients get the very best treatment, care and support, as well as their families.
Fundraisers can hold their heads high knowing that the money they raised at the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run will also go towards funding ground breaking research and clinical trials, specialist nurses, projects such as the Family and Children’s Room which betters the physical environment for patients, and so much more.
Velindre patient Angharad Underwood knows well the impact that the hospital can have, and commented: At Velindre they hold your hand and tell you straight, they put a blanket round you, and give you the tools to tell your kids. Velindre is forever in my heart, and I will always be fundraising for them, with them and shouting about them. They rock!
As well as being a proud Lead Charity, Velindre were at the forefront of the design for the finishers t-shirt, which turned Cardiff Bay into a sea of lime-green at the finish line. Mascot Lomu also featured on the 2K Family Fun Run medal design which was given out to everyone who took part in the Family Run.
